Eusebius further says that James was thrown from the pinnacle of the Temple on the feast of Passover for his refusal to deny Jesus, and that the future Roman emperor, Vespasian, began his siege of Jerusalem following James's death. There are obviously numerous legendary details in this account, but it does demonstrate the continued importance and authority that the figure of James exercised within the Christian Church. The Gnostic Writings:The importance of the figure of James emerges in a number of Gnostic writings.

They were, as in Mark's Gospel, present with Jesus in Galilee. Only the encounter with the risen Christ would transform their faith. Contrary to the view that "the brothers of Jesus" were unbelievers during his ministry, a careful assessment of the sparse references to them in the gospels reveals that this assumes too much. Like the disciples they were struggling to make sense of the person and ministry of Jesus. They did not reject Jesus, but continued to follow him. Above all the diatribe introduces an imaginary "sparring partner" whose objections the author introduces and then proceeds to answer.
