The brevity of the therapy is aimed at avoiding dependency and loss of clarity and focus over time. 29 Theoretical approaches to adolescent problems The main elements of brief therapy include: ● identifying current problems and specifying achievable goals clearly and quickly; ● focusing on the present; ● seeing people as having problems, not being problems; ● minimal intervention in people’s lives; ● focusing on strengths and resources the person already possesses; ● developing and evaluating action plans in collaboration with the person.

The self is composed of organised perceptions and the meanings attached to those perceptions. This is the actual self. The ideal self is that self which the individual would most like to be and includes those perceptions and meanings that he or she would most like to experience. This self is primarily a conscious one although there are experiences which the self has but of which it is unaware. Individuals may undergo incongruency between what they perceive as their self and their experiences. Anxiety can arise when they experience this incongruency.
