In SVRC the blades rely on the stator even though the contact is prevented by an oil film. Today, transient conditions in SVRC’s, which may imply little or no lubricating oil reaching the stator wall, are prevented by special honing off the stator and the blade tips. This honing traps enough oil from the previous steady state condition to assure safe transient lubrication conditions. Studies are now under way to further improve these operating conditions in an attempt to further reduce friction and improve machine performance; SVRC can reach high volumetric efficiency at low rotational speed.

2 EXPERIMENTAL METHODOLOGY Two compressors were investigated in the present work and their specifications are summarized in Table 1. Both compressors were designed for refrigerant R410A and for air conditioning applications. Compressor 1 was selected from a commercially available air-source split system for ducted residential applications while compressor 2 was selected from an air-source rooftop unit for light commercial building applications. It should be noticed that both compressors were scroll type but were intentionally from different manufacturers and of different brand.
